This is the Windows Help version (RWPAT.HLP) of 

"The Withering of Trade Union Patriarchy" by 

Carl J. Cuneo and published by the 

Electronic Journal of Sociology (EJS), 

Vol. 1, No. 3, August, 1995. 



Please check to make sure you have the following files:

readmec.txt (this file)

carlbmp.zip (90 graphic files, mainly bmps)

carlhlp.zip (one icon and one help files)

carlwav.zip (30 sound files in wav format)



You need about 15 MB free hard disk space 

     to run rwpat.hlp. 



This article is also available in:

(please ensure that you obey the upper and lower caps, and

pay attention to the differences between an "el" [as in "vol"] 

and a one "1" [as in "001"] ) 



To take full advantage of the multimedia capabilities 

of this article, you should have a sound card installed 

on your computer. 16 ASP is better than 8.



Because WinHelp has a 16 colour limit, you may wish to 

alter your display driver to make it compatible with 

rwpat.hlp.  To do this, exit Windows, enter the setup.exe 

in the Windows directory, and change the display to a 

driver with a 16 colour specification.  If you decide 

not to do this, many of the greyscale graphics 

in rwpat.hlp will have a bothersome green tinge.  



Please follow these instructions for installing and running 

RWPAT.HLP.



1)  Create a sub-directory on your hard drive called "rwpat".



2)  Copy carlbmp.zip, carlhlp.zip, carlwav.zip and

      readmec.txt to this sub-directory.



3)  Copy your version of pkunzip.exe to the rwpat directory.  



4)  In dos, go to the rwpat directory, and 

unzip or decompress the three files by typing:  

pkunzip carlbmp.zip

pkunzip carlhlp.zip

pkunzip carlwav.zip



5)  Re-enter Windows.  In your Program Manager, 

make active the program group where you want to place 

the rwpat icon.  Click on 'File', then 'New', then 

'Program Item'.  



6) Under the "Program Item Properties" dialog box, 

click the 'browse' button, then 'all files', 

and go to the rwpat directory.  Then click on 'rwpat.hlp'.

  

7) You are now back in the 'Program Item Properties" 

dialog box.  In the Description Box, type "Patriarchal 

Unionism".  Click on the "change icon' button.  

You will get a "path invalid" message.  Click <OK>.  

You will get the "Change Icon" dialog box. 

Click the <browse> button and go to the rwpat directory.  

Click on the <dick.ico> file.  



8) This returns you to the "Change Icon" dialog box.  

Click <OK>.  Under the "Program Item Properties" 

dialog box, click <OK> again. 



9)  You are now ready to view interactively "The Withering 

of Trade Union Patriarchy".  Make sure you have your speakers

turned on.  Click the <Patriarchal Unionism> icon.  

You have launched RWPAT.HLP. 



10)  If you do not wish to launch RWPAT.HLP from a 

program icon, you can click on "Help" at the top of the 

Program Manager screen, then click on 'Contents". 

Under "Program Manager Help", click on "File", 

then "Open".  Now go to the rwpat sub-directory

and click on <RWPAT.HLP>.   This will also launch 

the help file.



11)  Finally, the easiest and quickest way to launch 

the program is to go to the rwpat directory in your 

Windows File Manager, and double click <rwpat.hlp>.
