Joseph Andrew Arratta (JAA) was born at Mount Morgan, Queensland, in early 1899. He graduated from the Medical School of Sydney University in 1922, and after two years as Resident Medical Officer of Sydney Hospital, he became the Government Medical Office r of the Muttaburra Hospital in central-west Queensland.

Arratta was to spend the next thirty-five years at Muttaburra. His Memoirs provide a rare and rich account of life and medical practice in remote rural Queensland.
